Apps and Websites we use all the time
This is an app I use every day we cycle. It is my go to route finder to get us to our next destination, or as close to it as we can get. It costs $2.99 in the iTunes store. Before you get going on your trip you can download the maps you need to your devise. You can download whole countries or just the cities you want. By storing the maps on your devise you will be able to use the app without any connection to wifi or 3G. This is not a turn by turn navigation app but it will track you as you move along your planned route. You can choose between car, walking and cycling as different route options. The labels on the map can be displayed in either local or an international language that you choose or both. Other functions the app has are local search, a TripAdvisor search and a downloadable travel guide. I primarily use this app for route finding and not getting lost while cycling or walking around a city.

This is a must have app for anyone traveling in China, Japan and/or Korea. It is a free app with limited translations per day, but for $6.99 you get unlimited lifetime translations. Seeing that we would blow through the 10 free translations while sitting at dinner the $6.99 was a no brainer. Translate whole entire menus to find the food you want o eat. Note that it is not perfect and mistranslates now and then and you may still end up with something other than what you ordered. Works best on printed text. Has trouble with handwritten and fancy fonts. This app works offline!

XE is a great currency converter app. It is a free app. Works offline once you have updated with the local currency you want to use. You can compare up to 10 different currencies at the same time.

ICOON is a great app for use when you are at a loss for words. With over 1000 pictures in 12 categories you will find what you need to communicate, wether it is a type of food, type of accommodation or I have diarrhea this app has you covered. It costs $0.99 in the apple app store.

Agoda is a great way to book your hostel or hotel if you need to plan ahead. There is tax added on to the final booking but it usually is not much. We have found that sometimes the prices are more expensive on Agoda then if you book over the phone or in person, but often it is cheaper on Agoda. I have even tried to pay in cash at the hotel asking for the same price as on Agoda tying to give the money directly to the hotel, sometimes this works and other times they tell me to just book it online. The app is easier to use than thier webpage is. Great map features. It is a free app.

Ride with GPS is a website I use to help plan our routes. You can choose different options when picking a route, follow road or draw straight line. With the follow roads option you can optimize it for walking, cycling or driving. I use the straight line when we cross water on a ferry. The route gives you the milage and an elevation profile. With a premium account you can save as many rides as you want as well as make multiple routes on the same map. I use this to compare different ways that we could cycle. I also use this website to embed the routes we have cycled on our web page.
